Postdoctoral Fellowship Opportunity - Postdoctoral Fellowship on Rock Mechanics

We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher with expertise in rock mechanics, triaxial testing, and acoustic emission analysis. The successful candidate will contribute to cutting-edge research focused on understanding the mechanics of brittle rock failure and developing novel methodologies for using acoustic emission and ultrasonic velocity techniques. Our multidisciplinary team collaborates closely with industry partners to address real-world challenges in deep mining through innovative research and practical solutions.

The Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of British Columbia is a dynamic, inter-disciplinary Earth Sciences department, with research and teaching interests spanning the history of Earth and its functioning from the core to the stratosphere. (http://www.eoas.ubc.ca/).

The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting experimental studies on brittle rock behaviour using triaxial testing, acoustic emission and ultrasonic velocity equipment. Calibrating and maintaining acoustic emission equipment, sensors and software. Developing algorithms and subroutines to improve post-processing of acoustic emission data. Collaborating with graduate students to design and execute laboratory experiments and preparing research findings for publication in peer-reviewed journals and present results at conferences and industry workshops.

We highly value the following skills and knowledge for these positions:
• A PhD in Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Geophysics, or a related field.
• Strong background in rock mechanics, with expertise in triaxial testing and laboratory experimentation.
• Experience with acoustic emission analysis techniques, instrumentation and signal processing.
• Proficiency in data analysis and interpretation using software such as Python, MATLAB, or similar.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
• Demonstrated track record of research excellence, including publications in peer-reviewed journals.

The successful applicants will be supervised by the Director, Geological Engineering, Professor Erik Eberhardt.

The salary range for this position located in the Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences is expected to be $65,000 to $80,000 per annum. The position is two (2) years in length with an option to extend, start date can be discussed, but as early as June 1, 2024.

Candidates can submit their application here.
