UBC-GIF History

Beginnings: 1989 - 1991

The UBC-Geophysical Inversion Facility was started in 1989 with funds from the B.C. Science and Technology Fund. The goal was to establish a local centre of excellence with a mandate to develop new computer technologies for mineral exploration and to interact with industry on research projects of mutual interest. This has spawned a number of close interactions with industry and NSERC

The first collaboration was with E-SCAN Technologies. Modelling and inversion of 3D pole-pole DC resistivity were the first technical problems to be addressed.

1991 - 1997: The JACI Consortium

The goal of the projects carried out during this period of research was to develop strategies to invert individual geophysical data sets and to develop ways to incorporate other geophysical and geological data into the inversion. See the summary page for more details.

1997 - 1998: The INDI Consortium

INDI is an acronym for "3D Inversion of DC Resistivity and IP data''. The goal was to develop strategies for 3D inversion of DC resistivity and IP data.  See the INDI project summary page.

1999 - 2003: The IMAGE Consortium

The IMAGE consortium project was completed successfully in March 2003. Please see our IMAGE project page for details.

2001: Winner of the NSERC Leo Derikx Award

synergyA national award for "An established innovative model of long-standing university-industry partnership in pre-competitive R&D that has improved the general well-being of an industry". The NSERC Synergy Awards for Innovation showcase innovation and the benefits of pooling resources to make the most of Canadian ingenuity. The awards are judged on:

  • partnership;
  • effective use of resources;
  • tangible benefits; and
  • for the Leo Derikx Award only: innovative model.

Winning universities receive a $25,000 NSERC research grant. Industry partners receive the prestigious Synergy sculpture.

2003 - 2005: The TIME Consortium

The TIME consortium project was completed successfully in August 2005. Please see our TIME project page for details.

2005 - 2006: The ICIS Consortium

The ICIS consortium project was completed successfully in May 2006. Please see our Current research for details.

2006 - 2009: The MITEM Consortium

The MITEM (Multi-source Inversion of Timedomain ElectroMagnetic data) consortium project started in May 2006. Please see our Current research for details.

1998 - ongoing: UXO Characterization

Please refer to our UXO pages for details.

Ongoing research of all types

Please see our research overview page for links to pages describing current and recent research projects.
