Generalized tectonic map and shaded topographic relief map of the Guadalupe Mountains region. The topographic map reveals two major escarpments, one of which is tectonic, the other topographic.- A NNW striking normal fault scarp is located along the west, forming the spectacular "western escarpment" of the Guad's. This fault is located (fortuitously) perpendicular to strike of permian depositional facies, thus providing an unparalleled cross-section of the shelf margin. The dip symbol seen in the upper left corner shows that strata are tilted gently to the NE at about 10°. El Capitan is the highest point in Texas (8751 feet). The red dot is the location of Pine Springs Campground. Approximately 55 miles to the north of this campground along highway 62/180 is the entrance to Carlsbad caverns.
- The Capitan escarpment, shown in yellow, trends NE. This escarpment is an erosional feature, reflecting the shelf margin depositional contact between the massive, resistant Capitan Limestone (reef massive and foreslope) and the more easily weathered silts and sands of the Delaware Mountain Group. Along many of the canyons, represented by notches in the picture, cross sections of the shelf margin are exposed.
