In summary, parallel bedded dolostones of the lagoonal facies dip shallowly seaward into massive reef limestones of the Capitan Formation, a marginal mound. The Capitan "reef" produced large volumes of carbonate debris. That debris was shed down the basinward slope, forming the progradational clinoforms of the fore reef facies. The fore-reef facies interfingers with sands and silts of the Delaware Mountain Group. Surprisingly, exactly how the terrigenous sands of the Delaware Mountain Group bypassed the Capitan Reef as they traveled from the shoreline into the Delaware Basin remains an uncertainty. |
