During the Permian, North America lay at equatorial latitudes; western North America was shallowly submerged in a tropical Ocean. Eastern North America was a broad alluvial plain, with an expanding clastic wedge derived from the accelerating uplift of the Appalachian Mountains. Three lobes of a prominent marine embayment are shown; the central lobe, rimmed in red is known as the Delaware Basin. Palaeozoic sediments deposited in the Delaware Basin hold rich hydrocarbon (ie. oil and gas) reserves.
