Please Note: This slideshow was originally intended to provide an overview of the geological history of the Point Grey/Wreck Beach area. It was shown to students in introductory Geology courses at UBC, who used to take a field trip which follows the route outlined in this slideshow. Most photos were taken in the 1980s (plus or minus a few years) and some areas now (2005) look quite different. However, the slide set does make an interesting story, and geology classes may find them useful.

We will discuss the basic stratigraphy of the area, then move on to describing some of the recent (post-1935) events and attempts to slow down cliff erosion.

Below is an article which appeared in a local paper in 1989. As you read through this, as well as the handout provided in your lab manual, try to determine for yourself whether or not an accurate picture is being depicted, particularly with respect to the highlighted text, e.g.,

  • do you see any overhanging cliffs?
  • what is a berm?
  • where is Spanish Banks relative to the location of Wreck Beach?

Have fun!
