Resources
for Teachers
Minerals for Sign Out
We have a wide variety of
minerals available for teachers to sign out and take back to their
classes. Generally we do not have enough specimens of each separate
mineral for each student in a class, but samples are permitted to be
used for identification tests, including tests such as the scratch
test, the streak test, and the acid text, which result in damage to the
sample.
If you would like to borrow a
set of minerals, you may arrange a time to select samples and sign them
out with the curator.
Rocks for Sign Out
We have a variety of rocks of
all three types (igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic) available for
sign out. Not all samples are individually identified on a level more
detailed than the three major groups. The curator can help you with
such identifications, if necessary.
We
also have three standard rock sets which may be signed out. Each
standard rock set contains two samples of each of the following rocks:
basalt, breccia, congolmerate, diorite, gabbro, granite, limestone,
mudstone, obsidian, quartzite, sandstone, schist, slate, and tuff.
If you would like to borrow
rocks, you may arrange a time to select samples and sign them out with
the curator.
Fossils for Sign Out
We have a number of fossils
for sign out, including many trilobites, some ammonites, several
different types of coral, and a few other species. Fossils should be
treated with care when signed out, as the supply is limited.
If you would like to borrow
fossils, you may arrange a time to select samples and sign them out
with the curator.
Textbooks for Sign Out
We have a broad range of
textbooks available to be signed out and taken back to classrooms.
Subjects covered include physical geology, paleontology, oceanography,
natural disasters, and more. Some textbooks also come with multimedia
support (typically overhead transparencies and slide sets) and a small
number of titles have multiple copies available which could be
distributed among a class.
If you would like to borrow
textbooks, you may arrange a time to meet with the curator and sign
them out.
Space for Classes and
Presentations
If teachers would like to
arrange a space associated with the museum for students to conduct
Earth science related presentations or for a class, exercise, or other
activity to be held, the Teachers' Resource Centre can be reserved for
this purpose.
