2008 Fall Program
Come join us to celebrate National Earth Science Week.
On Saturday, October 18th, the Pacific Museum of the Earth will host a museum openhouse
Openhouse: 10am - 5pm
Directions
Museum Open House: Tours, Discussions, Demonstrations, and Hands-on Explorations
Guided museum tours:
Numerous exhibits span the diverse fields of Earth Science. Some
highlights include:
- precious gemstones in The Vault
- dinosaur fossils
- tornado machine
- local earthquake hazards
- diamond exploration
Hands-on Activities:
Led by EOS researchers, these activities allow you to explore
fundmental concepts in Earth Science and have fun in the process:
- Dig for real fossils (that you can take home with you!).
- Witness (and generate your own) meteorite impacts and the cratering they cause! Learn about extinctions.
- Bring your own rocks, minerals and fossils for experts to help you identify
- Experiment with convecting fluids and learn about volcanic eruptions!
- Learn about how landslides are modelled and predicted
- Learn about tsunamis and other types of waves
- Use a seismograph to measure earthquakes and experiment with resonance and building failure.
- Experiment with liquifaction during earthquakes.
- and many more...
Research Experiences:
Throughout the day, there will be short (~20 minute) presentations by
EOS researchers:
-
10:30: Earthquakes in Southwest BC
11:30: Mining and Mineral Exploration for copper and gold in BC and elsewhere
12:30: Understanding Volcanoes
-1:30: Climate and Oceans: Arctic Sea Ice Loss
-2:30: Imaging the Earth's Interior
-3:30: Landslides
-4:30: Shake and Bake: Earthquakes and Volcanoes
The openhouse will be a fun (and educational) event for the whole
family.
Activities for the kids, interesting exhibits, and opportunities for
all to ask questions of those doing research in the diverse fields of
Earth Science including: atmospheric science, oceanography, geology,
geochemistry, geophysics, and biology.
