Software:
Introduction
The UBC Geophysical Inversion Facility is an academic research group. Outcomes from our research, including codes and methodologies, are initially distributed to supporting organizations. Later on, some modelling and inversion programs are made available for academic or commerical licensing.
Utility codes, including graphical user interface (GUI) programs, are freely available. Utilities are developed to assist users with running UBC-GIF forward modelling and inversion codes, and with inspecting data and models. The GUIs are NOT designed for generating industry standard outputs, NOR for managing geophysical data sets. Please see Utility codes for a list of available utilities.
Documentation for all codes is also freely available - see the left hand menu under "Software Documentation".

Academic Licenses
Our policy has been to make selected modelling and inversion codes available, at no cost, to universities for teaching and research purposes. In return, we have asked that researchers respect the single-seat terms of the licenses, and for information on how the codes have been used. We also asked that proper acknowledgement be provided. Unfortunately this simple "honour system" policy has not worked well and in six years we have only received information about three projects even though more than 300 licenses have been issued.
We have decided to continue providing academic licenses for some modelling and inversion codes, however a new distribution model will be in place as of June 2006. The objectives are to:
- release updated versions of some codes for academic use;
- simplify the licensing procedure;
- keep more security on the codes so academic licenses do not get transferred to commercial or government, either intentionally or unintentionally;
- keep us more connected with
the academic researchers.
- We also ask that recipients pay much more attention to our requests for feedback.
- When referencing the use of UBC-GIF programs in your publications, please use a citation as shown on our FAQ page.
