Landers earthquake scarp, Mojave Desert, southern California. This spectacular fault scarp developed during a single earthquake which occurred on 28 June, 1992 at 4:58 am. The fault trends north orthwest, and, as the slide shows, has both lateral and vertical components of offset. You can see north-plunging slickensides on the fault surface (view is to the southeast). These relations indicate about 5 m of right-lateral motion and over 2 m of vertical offset. I took this slide about one week after the quake and subsequent erosion of the soft material has largely since obliterated these features.
