Close-up photo of the Capitan reef limestone at the mouth of Walnut Canyon. The capitan "reef" rock is generally thick and massive; thus it is termed Capitan massive. The Capitan massive was tectonically fractured, providing aqueous conduits for dissolution during the Quaternary to form the immense chambers of Carlsbad Caverns. Note the large calcareous sponges (white) with brown marine cement. [Nickel for scale.] Visit the Guadalupes, hike the Permian Trail, and you'll see lots more! |
