Close view of a typical granitic rock with characteristic even-grained granular texture. The rock consists of white feldspar, grey quartz, and a lesser amount of black mafic minerals. Many of the feldspar crystals show regular rectangular shapes, whereas the quartz grains are irregular and fill the spaces between the feldspars. This indicates that the feldpars in the rock began to form before the quartz, thus providing an example of serial crystallization. |
