Prof. Raymond Andersen has been awarded the 2012 CIC Medal, their most prestigious award, by the Chemical Institute of Canada. It is given annually to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the science of chemistry in Canada. Dr. Andersen is known for his research into the identity and structure of novel chemical compounds derived from marine organisms, the molecular routes to their biosynthesis, their role in ocean ecology and their potential as new drugs.

Annie Seagram , who completed the Environmental Sciences Program, (Starting ATSC MSc in September 2012) won a "EURSAP Young Researcher Award" for her paper: "Modelling recirculation of pollutants during ozone episodes in the Lower Fraser Valley, BC", presented at the 32nd International Technical Meeting on Air Pollution Modelling and its Application in Utrecht, The Netherlands May 7 - 11, 2012.

EOS Researchers Dominique Weis, Mark Jellinek and James Scoates, with two other colleagues from the University of Hawaii and the University of Amherst have an invited review paper that just came out online in Nature Geosciences. President’s Staff Award Recipients (Vancouver Campus) Enhancing the UBC Experience John Amor, Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences John Amor, Computing Manager for the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences, has stayed ahead of the curve in computer technology, to support Earth and Ocean Sciences with their evolving computing needs for research and learning. One of John’s many projects at UBC was the development of an innovative method of processing large quantities of digital data collected as a result of seismic field experiments for Canada’s national geoscience project, LITHOPROBE. John’s work was one of the factors contributing to the success of the $5-million research project. In the eyes of the nominator, “Without John Amor, the department would not be as successful as it is.”
Congratulations to Andrew Caruthers for winning the Bolton Prize for the best student presentation at the Canadian Paleontology Conference hosted by UBC in August. Andrew's paper established the global scope of what was once thought to be a regional European extinction during the Early Jurassic.
Each year Shell awards 4 undergraduate prizes for Excellence in Geological Field Work at the Oliver Field School (EOSC 328). This year the 4 winners were:

Roland Stull has been awarded a UBC Faculty of Science Achievement Award for Service to recognize his leadership in establishing the EOS Distance Learning Program. These awards are recognize excellence in service, leadership and administration for the Faculty of Science.
In recognition of outstanding contributions to teaching and learning, Rebecca Taylorhas been awarded a Killam Graduate Teaching Award. These awards go to less than 1% of the teaching assistants on campus.
The prize is awarded by the Office of the Provost for excellence in teaching. Sara's success falls on the heels of Douw Steyn winning the Prize last year - a great testament to EOS excellence in teaching.
Cathryn Clarke-Murray has won the first place ($500 Cash Prize) in the Poster Competition at the Canadian Aquatic Invasive Species Network (CAISN) Final Conference held in Quebec City in April 2011. The title of her presentation was "Drag racing invasive species: buckle up and hold on tight". Coauthored by Patrick Martone (Botany), Evgeny Pakhomov (EOS) and Thomas Therriault (DFO)
On April 21 Josh won the Margaret Fulton Award for UBC student development in part because of his work with the Carl Wieman Initiative for improving undergraduate science education via his work as a Science Teaching and Learning Fellow in EOS and additionally for spear-heading the creation of an Ombuds Office at UBC.

Congratulations to EOS Honours Geological Sciences student Halley Keevil who received the poster presentation award at the UBC's Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Conference.
Profs. Maite Maldonado and Philippe Tortell have been awarded UBC Faculty Killam research fellowships. These highly coveted UBC fellowships are awarded to assist promising faculty members who wish to devote full time to research and study in their field during a study leave, and are awarded on the basis of "special distinction of intellect". Nine were awarded across all of UBC this year.
It is a great pleasure to announce that *Douw Steyn* has been awarded the National Earth Science Mentorship Medal of the Canadian Foundation for Earth Sciences. This award recognizes sustained and inspirational mentorship at all levels and was set up in honour of Paul F. Williams, a geologist known for scientific and mentoring excellence, candour and integrity -- a description that applies equally to Douw. Information on the medal award ceremony will be circulated as it becomes available. Until then, please join me in congratulating Douw!

EOS graduate students won two of three student poster prizes at the Mineral Exploration Round-Up last month here in Vancouver, one of the largest industry conferences of this type in the world:
Elizabeth Stock (Mineral Deposit Research Unit, advisors Greg Dipple and Dick Tosdal) won second prize for her poster: "Superposed metamorphism and alteration at the Red Lake Gold deposit, Ontario"
Dikun Yang (Geophysical Inversion Facility, advisor Doug Oldenburg) won third prize for his poster: "Delineation of Porphyry Cu-Au Deposit by 3D Airborne Time Domain Electromagnetic Inversion".
Dominique Weis has been selected as a 2011 Geochemical Fellow. This honorary title is bestowed jointly by The Geochemical Society and The European Association of Geochemistry upon outstanding scientists who have, over some years, made a major contribution to the field of geochemistry.
Prof. Raymond Andersen has been awarded the 2010 UBC Jacob Biely Research Prize. The prize was established in 1969 and is regarded as UBC’s premier award for research.
The 2010 A.G. Huntsman Award recipient is Professor Curtis A. Suttle (FRSC) in recognition of his contributions to biological oceanography. Dr. Suttle is one of the World's leading marine virologists, and is among a small group of researchers that is credited with launching the field of marine virology nearly twenty years ago. These studies demonstrated that viruses are not only the most abundant and genetically diverse biological entities in the World's oceans, but they are major agents of mortality. The results have had a significant impact on our understanding of nutrient and energy flow in the oceans, and have been a catalyst in the re-invigoration of phage biology and environmental virology. His contributions cross over many fields including biological oceanography, environmental microbiology, microbial ecology, virology and phycology. Dr. Suttle was an Associate Professor (1996 – 2000), Professor (since 2000), and Associate Dean of Science (since 2001) at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, British Columbia. He received his B.Sc. in zoology in 1978 and his Ph.D. in botany in 1987, both from UBC. His career has taken him to government laboratories and academic institutions in Canada, the United States, and Germany, with a significant amount of time (1988 – 1996) at the University of Texas at Austin.

Leann was awarded first place and received a prize of $1000.

Anjali Nayar, a 2003 graduate in combined honours Geology and Biology, and her co-author Juliane von Mittelstaedt have been awarded the 2010 IUCN-Reuters-COMplus Media Award for Excellence in Environmental Reporting for their articles on saving the forests in Madagascar and Brazil. The prestigious Bowie Lecture Series recognizes one person from each of the 13 sections of the American Geophysical Union asking them to deliver a lecture at an annual meeting of the AGU. This year, two of the 13 lectures are to be delivered by members of the UBC Earth and Ocean Sciences Department:
Prof. Michael Bostock- the Gutenberg Lecture in Seismology
Prof. Dominique Weis - the Daly Lecture in Volcanology, Geochemistry and Petrology

The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C has awarded:
1) The MERITORIOUS ACHIEVEMENT AWARD to EOS Prof. Oldrich Hungr for (according to their criteria) having "achieved distinction and outstanding goals associated with his profession".
2) the C.J. WESTERMAN MEMORIAL AWARD to EOS adjunct professor Catherine Hickson. This award recognizes "significant contributions to professional geoscience" and "outstanding community service".

Director of the Mineral Deposit Research Unit Craig Hart has been awarded the Society of Economic Geology Distinguished Lecturer Award and will present invited lectures at meetings in Denver and London.
Felix Herrmann's DNOISE II project has been funded by NSERC. This project matches dollar-for-dollar current and planned future contributions from the following companies: BG Group, BP, CGGVeritas, Chevron, ConocoPhilips, Inova Geophysica, Petrobras, Total SA, and WesternGeco. DNOISE II is a 5-year project with a annual funding of approximately CAN $ 1M, concentrated primarily on research support for grad students and postdoctoral fellows. The aim of the DNOISE project is to design the next generation of seismic imaging technology to address fundamental issues related to the quality and cost of seismic data acquisition, to the ability to invert exceedingly large data volumes, and to the capacity to mitigate non-uniqueness of full-waveform inversion, while training the next generation of scientists in these areas.

Prof. Hungr will be officially recognized during the the Presidential Address at the GSA Annual meeting in Denver, Saturday, 30 October.
The new 'green-screen' exhibit at the Pacific Museum of the Earth allows visitors to simulate giving their own weather forecast on TV. This was recently featured on Global TV ( see a clip here ).
