News & Announcements - Winter/Spring 2012

Posted January 4, 2012: Welcome to the Course!

There are a few things still under construction on this site, particularly on the "Labs" page.

Welcome to EOSC 111 - Laboratory exploration of Planet Earth. We hope you will find this course educational, stimulating, and fun. Please visit this home page often for course announcements and updates. Explore all the tabs at the top of this page. The "Labs" tab is password protected. Look on the VISTA homepage for the username and password you'll need to access the "Labs" tab.

First things first - There will be NO lab sessions during the first week of the term (Jan. 4th-6th)! Please attend your regular lab section during the second week of the term (January 10-13) for the Introductory Lab in EOS-Main room 111. YOU MUST ATTEND THIS SESSION as we will conduct activities that form the foundation for the course. We will also outline critical information regarding class structure, and grading, and explain the various usernames and passwords you'll need. If you cannot attend your scheduled lab during the second week, feel free to drop into ANY other Introductory Lab section (see Meetings webpage for other lab sections).

The course does require access to the internet, in order to complete some of the work on the course's VISTA site. If you need access to a computer on campus, please see the undergraduate secretary in the Earth & Ocean Science Department office (Rm 113 EOS-Main). Bring your student ID. he will give you a username and password for access to our computer labs. There is a small fee. Whenever these computer rooms are NOT scheduled for an organized class or lab meeting, then you as an unscheduled "walk in" may use them on first-come first-served availability basis.

If you have questions about the course, please visit the "Help" tab first. If your question isn't fully answered, then feel free to contact the course administrator, Randal Mindell (rmindell (at) eos.ubc.ca, EOS-South Room 164, 822-6456). If you have special circumstances or you need a signature for something, the course administrator is the person to contact. If you find that the course adminstrator hasn't responded to email in a reasonable time (about 2 business days), please call or stop by his office. If you have a "hotmail" account, it's quite possible that your email was marked as spam!
