Departmental Advising

The Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences at UBC is a friendly place that is dedicated both to student education and to research. Undergraduate students are encouraged to get involved in all aspects of the department by participating in ongoing research projects, on departmental committees, and in department club activities.

Getting Help to Solve Problems or Plan Your Degree Program

In Earth and Ocean Sciences, our degree program advisors are all full-time faculty members, and (by appointment) we provide individual attention to students with questions about their degree program, courses, and/or career plans. Find out who your EOS Departmental Advisor is here: Majors EOS | Geol Sci | Geol Eng | Geophysics | Oceanography | ATSC | Env Sci | Co-op
Career Planning: Geol Sci | GeoEng

Special notes

  • Each year the Annual EOS Advising Meeting starts at 11am on Imagine Day, the first Tuesday of the term in September. It is held in the EOS-Main Museum area. Every undergraduate student in the department is invited, and you should attend to get the latest information on all of the EOS degrees, meet the advisors, and learn about departmental scholarships and how to join departmental student clubs.
  • Admission to any of the EOS specializations requires an application to the Faculty of Science for a Majors program. Even if you want to pursue an Honours degree, you must FIRST register in a Majors program (such as Majors EOS) via the Faculty of Science online application. Normally this would occur prior to registration in the summer following year 1 or, for transfer students, before you first register for courses at UBC. Early contact with the appropriate EOS advisor, to discuss your intended specialization, is strongly recommended.
  • Please do not expect to find advisors in their office at all times on every day; you should phone or email ahead to make an appointment or to confirm availability.
  • The Majors program in EOS is very flexible in terms of which courses to take, and therefore program advising is important. (This is especially true if you plan to register as a Professional Geoscientist with APEGBC.)
  • Opinions of geoscience industry professionals were obtained by interviewing 64 participants at Vancouvers Roundup Convention, January 2010. The report is written partly to help advise students regarding decisions that affect their careers.

Admissions-related Advising

Questions about admission to UBC, either directly from secondary school or from another post-secondary institution, and questions about transfer credit should be directed to the Admissions Office in Enrollment Services.

Faculty Level Advising

For Faculty-level matters such as applying for a specialization (e.g., Honours, Combined Honours (CHN), or Majors in EOS department programs), registering in Combined Majors or Double Majors or Minor programs, changing faculties (e.g., Arts to Science), Faculty-level course requirements including first-year courses, removal of registration blocks, registering and the Freedon of Information Act, permission to take more than 33 credits, Academic Concession, and Standing Deferred, contact the appropriate Faculty Office directly. Students are strongly urged to read the Advising, Academic Regulations, and Degree Requirements sections under the listing for their Faculty (Science or Applied Science) in the UBC Calendar.
