Graduate Program Entrance Requirements

Entrance Requirements

Please ensure you meet UBC's minimum entrance requirements for students with international and domestic qualifications before applying. You can find more about the specific entrance requirements through the program description links on the previous page.

Please note that we do not guarantee entry even if you meet the minimum entry requirements.

Test of English Language

Applicants from a university outside of North America where English is not the primary language of instruction must submit an official copy of an acceptable test of English language. Departmental TOEFL requirements are: 250 (computer-based) or 600 (paper-based) or 100 (internet-based).

Direct Admission to PhD

For students of exceptional caliber we offer the opportunity to enter a PhD program with only an undergraduate degree. These students:

  • Must have an overall first class average GPA.
  • Must demonstrate advanced research ability. This can be demonstrated through publications, research prizes and references from your supervisor/s.
  • Are required to complete 12 credits with a first class average during their first year of study. At least 9 credits must be at the 500-level or above and at least 9 credits must be of first class standing.
  • Are unlikely to be offered a Four Year Fellowship (FYF) starting from their entry date. However, they can hold a FYF at a later date and will also be eligible for any tuition fee awards offered at UBC.

Please note those students who start in the masters program can transfer into the PhD program after their first year without completing the masters.
