Profile

Pacific Centre for Isotopic and Geochemical Research (PCIGR)

The PCIGR is an integrated analytical research centre, equipped with up-to-date analytical instrumentation and cleanroom laboratories.  The PCIGR provides high-quality analytical services and support for university researchers, government agencies, the mineral exploration industry and the international research community.  The PCIGR promotes training and multi-disciplinary research in the earth, environmental, oceanographic, atmospheric and biological sciences.

Just completed: the new PCIGR-CFI analytical facility

The PCIGR proposal led by D. Weis was approved for full-funding from both the Leading Edge Fund of the Canada Foundation for Innovation and the BC Knowledge Development Fund. With in-kind contributions, PCIGR received a total investment of ~$7.5 million to expand and update its geochemical analytical equipment.  The centerpiece of the new proposal is a Nu 1700, a large geometry high-resolution multi-collector plasma mass spectrometer, in addition to other cutting-edge instruments.

A research and development (R&D) project has also been developed with Nu Instruments Ltd. to establish a unique geochemical facility in North America that will allow for new analytical developments and integration with teaching and outreach into EOS and the ESB.

Construction began February 2011 and was completed at the end of August 2011, with instrument move-in and cleanroom certification taking place in September and October 2011.

My Role as PCIGR-CFI Project Manager

I am currently helping  to coordinate the highly specialized renovations and installation of the new instruments.  After all of the instruments have been installed, I will assist with ensuring proper operation/maintenance and quality control, as well as organizing user training, preparing budgets and forecasting requirements, developing strategic work plans, and setting priorities and goals for equipment use and expansion.

I manage the PR for the PCIGR, from the Department level to representation at national and international conferences.  I am responsible for seeking industry collaborators and preparing funding proposals to support the facility, and am working to identify and develop new research partnership opportunities to expand the lab's user community.  I am also in charge of coordinating the interface with the Pacific Museum of the Earth and developing outreach materials and activities.

Interests

RESEARCH INTERESTS

  • mantle geochemistry

  • radiogenic isotope and trace element geochemistry

  • composition, evolution, and structure of mantle plumes

  • Hawaiian post-shield volcanism

The goals of my M.Sc. research were to (1) provide a greater understanding of Hawaiian post-shield volcanism, (2) characterize the geochemical evolution of Hawaiian volcanoes from the shield to post-shield stage, and (3) better define the geochemical structure of the Hawaiian plume. Specifically, my research investigated (a) if the observed isotopic variations can be explained by a radially zoned plume, (b) what variations must be attributed to to longitudinal rather than radial heterogeneity, (c) the relationship between small-scale heterogeneity and large-scale zoning in the plume, (d) how the isotopic compositions correspond to structure at the plume source, and (e) if any of the structure is due to entrained material higher in the mantle.
