Research Interests
RESEARCH INTERESTS: My Ph.D. research involved the study of the systematics and paleobiology of Hettangian ammonites from British Columbia. The Hettangian is the first stage in the Jurassic, and thus, follows the end-Triassic mass extinction. Only one group of ammonites survived this extinction, forming the basis for the spectacular adaptive radiation of the group in the earliest Jurassic. The taxonomy from my study establishes a better understanding of the forms present in B.C. over this interval. The lateral distribution of ammonite faunas suggest there may have been some longitudinal separation between the craton and the Cadwallader, Wrangellia and Peninsular terranes during the Hettangian. They also support a significant northward displacement for Wrangellia relative to the craton since Early Jurassic time and suggest that the Hispanic Corridor connecting the Panthalassa and Tethys oceans may have been open during the Hettangian. Sexual dimorphism is present in several Hettangian ammonite genera. Furthermore, many Hettangian ammonites show considerable asymmetries in the vertical position of the internal elements of their phragmocone. We used computer models to assess the hydrostatic affects of these asymmetries on the ammonite, Badouxia columbiae.
My current postdoctoral research involves examining patterns of ammonite morphology in the Late Triassic and Early Jurassic.
