Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences faculty, staff and students have been successful at winning awards for excellence in research activities, teaching, leadership and service both within the Department, the Faculty of Science and UBC, as well as externally through honours such as the Canada Research Chairs and Fellowships from organizations such as the Royal Society of Canada, the Mineralogical Society of America and the American Geophysical Union, and the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society, among others.

The awards listed here reflect well upon the continuing excellence of EOAS Department members and on their motivation to succeed.

The EOAS Undergraduate Prizes and Scholarships Committee and the Faculty-Staff Prizes Committee help to identify and nominate faculty, staff and students in the Department for awards. Anyone wishing to nominate EOAS faculty, staff or students in EOAS for an award should contact the Chair of the appropriate committee.

Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, UBC - Department Rankings

In a recent ranking by NSERC of the total number of publications by sub-field in the field of Natural Sciences and Engineering (1999-2004) at Canadian doctoral/medical universities, Earth and Ocean Sciences at UBC was alone at UBC in being ranked first in its field. EOS also ranked first in the 5-year average of Earth and Ocean Sciences Research Grants and the NSERC 5-Year per capita averages of UBC Science Departments national rankings (see below.)
